Materials Processing (327-0623-00L)

This extended 7 CP course consists of a lecture part and a practical part. It provides a detailed theoretical and experimental background on the basic concepts of materials processing, with a detailed focus on metals, ceramics and polymers.

The students are able to

  • Explain and describe overarching principles of materials processing, which are valid for all materials classes (metals, polymers, and ceramics).
  • Develop and analyze material-specific characteristics of the processing of ceramics, polymers, and metals in the form of classroom sessions, case studies, and laboratory experiments.
  • Point out and assess similarities and differences between the various materials classes from the raw material to the end product.

Content

Lecture (Wed. 8-10 am)

After an introduction towards the application of transport phenomena in the general aspects of materials processing, this lecture will discuss the main processing methods for metals, polymers, and ceramics. Basic principles of thin-film processing will also be presented.

Practical part (Mo. 2-6 pm)

In the accompanying laboratory exercises, various important processing techniques are demonstrated, such as preparation of metals via vacuum induction melting; extrusion of metals and polymers; deep drawing of polymers and metals; injection molding of polymers; pressing, milling, and sintering of ceramics; 3D printing of ceramic slips; and thin-film processing.

An excursion to Swiss industry will also be offered, covering metal casting (high- and low-pressure die casting, continuous casting, extrusion molding) and forging (open-die forging, drop forging, ring rolling). The excursion in 2023 will take place on Tuesday, May 16 with a departure at 7:30 a.m. from “Carparkplatz Sihlquai” and a return at 6:00 p.m.
