Magnetic Earth Materials

In this area, we combine methods of solid-state physics, materials science and earth science to understand the structural and magnetic properties of widespread terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials. We focus in particular on Fe monosulfides, which reveal vacancy-dependent magnetic properties. Here we study ferrimagnetic Fe7S8 (4C pyrrhotite), which reveals the important Besnus transition, and other Fe7S8 polytypes to get insight into their provenance in Earth and extraterrestrial systems, and to understand in more detail the basic properties of vacancy-induced magnetic systems.
